Do I need Liposuction or a Tummy Tuck?

Liposuction Scottsdale Candidate

Pre op photos show a 27 year old female that post one pregnancy had significant stretch marks, diastasis, minor fat depot of flanks and loss of breast volume. She underwent a Type IV abdominoplasty, lipo of flanks-hips, and breast augmentation with Allergan Natrelle smooth 375cc silicone gel implants

This is a common question we hear when a patient (male or female) ask us here at The Carlotti Center.  Is the fullness present around the waist line correctable with just liposuction, just an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) or perhaps both?  Before we give you a few tips on how you can tell which procedure is right for you, let’s first define the procedures.

Patient above after 4 months post op.

Liposuction, or preferably, Liposculpture, is the contouring of the subcutaneous (beneath the skin) fatty deposits.  Just like in sculpture of marble, it not about what you remove, but what is left that matters.  A lot of times patients have a lot of visceral fat, or fat deep to the underlying muscle inside the abdomen surrounding the organs.  This fat is unreachable by cosmetic surgery and is best dealt with by diet and exercise.  We recommend the Isagenix program for this and to learn more please schedule a consultation and we can get you started right away.

In Liposculpture, the fat deposits beneath the skin are removed.  When we lose weight by diet and exercise, fat cells shrink in size and not decrease in number as opposed to liposculpture which actually removes them permanently. Small port incisions are carefully concealed which disappear over time

Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck is a procedure designed to remove excess fat below the belly button, excess skin and tighten the underlying “six-pack” muscles (rectus) which may have separated during pregnancy or weight gain.  Incisions are required around the belly button and in the bikini line hip to hip.  This procedure does require an overnight stay here at the Carlotti Center.

So, how do you know which procedure is likely necessary?

Do I have small fat deposits deep to the skin around my waist BUT do I have normal skin tone, no widening of my abdominal muscles and no hanging skin?  If the answer is YES then in most cases, Liposculpture alone will be effective

Do I have excess skin, poor skin tone (stretch marks), a frowning belly button, and widening of my abdominal muscles?  If the answer is YES then Abdominoplasty is necessary.

Do I have no excess fat BUT I have widening of my abdominal muscles?  If the answer is YES then I need an endoscopic Abdominoplasty (smaller incisions).

Did I respond to question #2 above as YES and I have fatty deposits on my lower back (muffin top)?  If the answer is YES then I likely need an Abdominoplasty AND liposculpture of my lower back (flanks).

Really, to learn more, it is best to meet with either Dr. Albert Carlotti or Dr. Michelle Carlotti for an comprehensive consultation so that we can meet with you, best define your goals and help you plan a procedure which will best meet your expectations!
